“The cramped basement is super-cute and atmospheric” (“its booths and candles making it one of the more romantic venues in town”) at this “little piece of Paris in the heart of Covent Garden”. With its “decent French provincial-style cooking” it is particularly tipped as a “very acceptable pre-theatre option”.

“A delightful throwback to the French bistros of the 1980s, set over a couple of floors, with tables crammed into nooks and crannies” – this Covent Garden stalwart is “very romantic, with its candles and cosy booths”. The “traditional, unpretentious food” is “good value” (“nothing fancy, but consistent”) while the “staff are so friendly”: if you’re in a hurry pre-theatre, “they put you through fast without seeming to hassle you”, but “if you have more time they let you linger”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

Le Garrick is a classic French restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden that has one of the most intimate settings, offering an authentic menu inspired by the cooking from the South West region of France.

Opened over 30 years ago, Le Garrick is run by Dominika and Charles, who met in the restaurant over 10 years ago. Charles, a true French man, soon became a regular customer after discovering this little piece of France in London's West End.

In an area packed with chains, Le Garrick is unique - an independent, family run business where the staff share a passion for offering good, honest, reasonably priced French food.  Charles' upbringing in Toulouse, Burgundy and the Basque country have been an inspiration for many of the dishes on the menu at Le Garrick which are family recipes, many influenced by his mother. Like an extended family, the staff infuse the restaurant with an infectious joie de vivre.

Split over two levels, Le Garrick has a bright and welcoming street level dining room, great for people watching on the bustling streets of theatreland, whilst downstairs you will discover one of the most intimate settings in the capital. The bar and dining room features rustic brickwork, booth seating with candlelit alcoves, romantic nooks and crannies, secluded corners and a welcoming atmosphere - a true hidden gem which attracts both local businesses and a bohemian crowd of theatre goers, actors and artists alike.

"Mostly good It's what one would describe as an intimate venue, not a huge amount of space. My partner had the pre theatre menu and her only issue was the slightly crunchy mussels, they hadn't been properly washed so had residue grit when cooked. My meal was nice Toilets down a spiral staircase very small too. "

"An enjoyable, though slightly disappointing, evening meal. The food (especially the hanger steak) was not top quality. Most of staff were friendly and quite efficient and the downstairs room with its tables tucked away in recesses was interesting and fairly oricsrd. "

"Nice standard French food, not an overly complex menu, decent wine. Nice staff, lovely ambience, felt like we could have been in Bordeaux. Will return."
